It is usually triggered by undersea earthquake in 50km deep and stronger than 6.5 magnitude. The speed of this potentially damaging wave is approximately up to 500~100km per hour(very quickly). When it comes near the coast, because of the deep becoming much more shallow, then the height of wave can be up to dozens meters.
Besides, the eruption of submarine volcano, underwater nuclear explosion, and aerolite striking Earth can also lead to tsunami, and it can be much more horrible......The height of wave can reach several hundred metes!!
Without doubt, tsunami is a terrible destroyer.Take a look at Japan's 311 Tsunami, it destroy not only the whole city but also the nuclear plant, which lead to a series of tragedies......

Luckily, though Taiwan is located in Circum-Pacific seismic belt, there are seldom tsunami hitting us. Thanks to the steep slope in the east coast, waves are easy to be refracted and then go away. However, if a big earthquake strikes in South China Sea, it is highly possible that a tsunami hit us.(Fortunately, it is little possible that an earthquake happening there)
I think tsunami is quite terrible:(
